For its privileged geographic position, Cuba is visited each year by a large amount of migratory birds, many of which make a brief visit to the island to rest after long journeys and then continue their flight towards the south; others receive the category of winter birds for remaining on the island until the spring.

Cuba is an attractive destination for bird watchers for its geographic location, the conservation of its ecosystems, sub tropical climate, great biodiversity, and high level of endemism.

You can tour the city of Havana. Panoramic tours in western Pinar del Rio and the go bird watching in the Sierra del Rosario Mountains and Viñales Valley, both in Pinar del Rio. Visit and lodge two nights in the Zapata Peninsula, one of the most lavished and rich areas with endemic birds and other migrating birds, and also go night bird watching in the area.

The Viñales Valley in the Sierra de los Organos near the western end of the island of Cuba is an outstanding karst landscape encircled by mountains and dotted with spectacular dome-like limestone outcrops (mogotes) that rise as high as 300 m. Cienaga de Zapata is one of Cuba’s most diverse ecosystems. Crowded into this vast wetland (essentially two swamps divided by a rocky central tract) are 14 different vegetation formations including mangroves, wood, dry wood, cactus, savannah, selva and semideciduous. There are also extensive salt pans. The marshes support more than 190 bird species, 31 types of reptiles, 12 species of mammals, plus countless amphibians, fish and insects (including the insatiable mosquito).
